benjamin mcvey

Born in Houston, TX. Benjamin received his BFA from Texas State University in 1995 and his MFA from The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2012. Previously, he studied painting and drawing in New York City at the Art Students League and National Academy of Design. He lives in San Antonio, TX where he maintains a vigorous studio practice.
 
Currently, he teaches 2D Foundations and lectures for the Austin Community College system. He has taught painting, drawing, and sculpture at The University of Texas at San Antonio, drawing at Northwest Vista College, which is part of the Alamo College system, and painting and drawing at the Southwest School of Art. He has exhibited in New York, Kentucky, Florida, and Texas, and has numerous works in private collections nationally and internationally (New York, California, Texas, Denmark, and UK), along with public collections (Eastfield College, Mesquite, TX and The City of Bastrop, TX).

In 2017, he was chosen as the inaugural artist for Artpace’s Main Space gallery with his proposed Open project, moving his entire studio practice into Artpace’s front windows where he worked for three months, January 26th to April 30th. That June he was awarded an artist residency at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams, MA. Past residencies include the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT, receiving an Artist/Writer Grant, and at The League Residency at Vytlacil in Sparkill, NY, receiving the Ruth Katzman Scholarship. Also, in 2016, he was one of eighteen artists selected throughout Texas to be featured in the Texas Draws IV biennial at the Southwest School of Art.
